It has been a crisis like no other. To tackle the health emergency, countries had to bring economic life to a standstill during the Great Lockdown. This created the worst recession since the Great Depression. The IMF acted swiftly to help people and countries, while enormous uncertainty clouded the prospects for the global economy and the world continued to wrestle with the pandemic’s unknowns.

In the face of unprecedented uncertainty and the severe economic impact triggered by COVID-19, the Fund is assisting members to cope with this once-in-a-century pandemic. IMF lending programs are adapting—through innovation and increased flexibility—as countries move from the initial containment phase, to stabilization, and eventually to recovery. The Fund aims to ensure realistic targets, uphold the credibility of programs, and foster national ownership. As of September 2020, the Fund has provided financial assistance, mainly through emergency lending and precautionary lending tools, to about 80 countries.
