Abstract: No all the aspects of the history uf social economy are well known. This paper analyses the beguinings of portuguese social economy history. In 1840 a Porto review have published parts of the Ramon de la Sagra book on sociial economy. This concept was used by diferents portuguese authors. For them it covered a critical aproach on mainstream polítical economy, proposals on the reform of measures and institucions of social welfare and it was the expression of the workers organisations like the cooperatives, friendly societies, and other associations. The main schools of thinking in XIX century, liberals, socialists and cristians, were also presents on portuguese literature
